The yen held steady as Japan's stocks fell. The Nikkei 225 dropped 4.90% to 64,425.95 on Thursday, Yahoo Finance data show.
Will Japan intervene to support the yen?
Officials have not said. Katayama said Thursday that authorities were ready to intervene in the currency market again if needed, and that Japan and the United States had kept their stance since their joint intervention in July, Trading Economics reported.
Japan has acted twice this year, Ministry of Finance data show. It bought ¥11.7 trillion over three days from April 30 to May 6, and ¥15.4 trillion from July 30 to Aug. 26. Katayama said on Aug. 3 that Japan bought yen together with the U.S. Treasury on July 31, U.S. time, and added: "We will not hesitate to conduct further joint intervention." The ministry reported no intervention from Aug. 27 to Sept. 28. In 2024, it bought yen on April 29, May 1, July 11 and July 12.
On Sept. 28, top currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura told Reuters that "markets should take that message at face value," referring to warnings from Tokyo and Washington. Asked whether funding could limit yen buying, he said: "I have absolutely no such concern."
How wide is the U.S.-Japan yield gap?
Still wide, and wider than in July. The table compares 10-year yields.
| Date | U.S. 10-year | Japan 10-year | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 30 | 4.68% | 2.801% | 1.88 pts |
| Sept. 30 | 5.29% | 3.057% | 2.23 pts |
| Oct. 14 | 5.19% | 3.015% | 2.18 pts |

A wider gap gives investors more reason to hold dollars instead of yen.
When does the Bank of Japan meet next?
The Bank of Japan meets Oct. 29–30, its schedule shows. On Sept. 18 it raised its policy rate to about 1.25% in a 7–2 vote, effective Sept. 24. Trading Economics cited reports that the bank was reluctant to raise rates again this month but was still considering a December increase. It said board member Junko Koeda warned Thursday against too much restraint on rate hikes.
